The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have become the largest football confederation in the world.
CAF’s
members have been increased after the acceptance of Zanzibar at the
39th Ordinary General
Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
At the congress, Zanzibar were unanimously accepted to take CAF members to 54.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa.
Once
under British control, they got independent in 1963 and one-year later,
they merged with former African state of Tanganyika to form Tanzania.
Although
part of the country of Tanzania, Zanzibar still elect their own
President and House of Representatives, and they deal with internal
matters.
They also formed their own football association the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) which has now been accepted as members of CAF.
This is a return for
Zanzibar who were removed from CAF in 2005 after there were rejected by
world football governing body, FIFA.
After the
removal, there became just associate member of CAF as their club sides
only participated in CAF continental club competitions.
Players from Zanzibar were only eligible to play in international competition for the Tanzania team.
